Moss Beach Ranch Trainer Profiles:

Jeanette Jacobi, Senior Instructor
Training for horse and rider is a continuous setting of realistic
goals and working to achieve them. The goal of my teaching is to produce a team consisting
of a confident rider on a versatile happy horse. In my training I focus on giving my
students hands on experience. Every student needs to know that good horsemanship is the
basic requirement for all success in equestrian sports. Good horsemanship is based on expertise, a lot of
commitment, and hard work. To perform their best horses must have proper
nutrition, a clean environment and good care. The training of the horse is
based on the physical condition of the horse as well as that of the rider. When I take horses in training I focus on building an
athlete. Often times it takes different approaches. In general I use
dressage sometimes as physical therapy, or to built up coordination, balance
and strength. Cross country riding is were the horse learns agility. Hill
work and interval training built endurance and stamina. Giving horses and
riders different sceneries and exercises keeps the horses happy and doesn’t
over drill them. Once the
riders have reached a certain level of expertise, I do encourage them to develop an
independence that will lead to the use of good judgement in their horsemanship decisions.
The goal of training is to built a good team a well seated, athletic rider who has
confidence and fun, and a versatile well kept horse. |

Heather C. Balliet, Instructor
safety, fun, and a belief
that perfect practice makes perfect
Heather offers
instruction in Western and English riding as well as horsemanship and
specializes in Hunter/Jumper and barrel racing for all levels and abilities.
With a focus on the
sport of rodeo, Heather was most recently a very active and successful
competitor in the California divisional barrel races—racing at the 2004
American West finals in Reno. Prior to that, she schooled World Cup and
Olympic Hunter/Jumper horses for team New Zealand. Heather also managed
professional Hunter/Jumper horses and traveled through the United States and
Canada on the A-Circuit.
Heather grew up riding
horses on the California coast and, as a child, started competing in
English, Western, and showmanship. While working under a professional
Dressage rider, Heather learned to train horses in proper collection,
balance, and straightness and became an assistant trainer at a combined
training barn.
Heather is a member of
the American West Barrel Racers 4-D, Barrel Racers Northwest 4-D, American
Quarter Horse Association, and the United States Equestrian Federation. |

Colleen Shjeflo, Instructor
With a
background in western pleasure, equitation, and showmanship, Colleen has
over a decade of riding experience. She has competed in rodeo pageants and
barrel racing events and has ridden in parades and color guards. What’s
more, Colleen and her horse, Seabee, won state and reserve championships two
years in a row in the California State Horseman’s Association “Trail Trials”
program.
“I
love being an instructor because every horse and student teaches me
something new,”--Colleen.
As
an instructor, Colleen focuses on meeting the goals of the rider—whether it
is western showing, rodeo competition, problem solving on trail, or just
having a great time. She begins each lesson by assessing the needs of each
of the student, and then personalizes the lesson, making sure it’s a
valuable and enjoyable experience for both the horse and the rider.

Stephanie Hakett, Instructor I have enjoyed working with horses from a very early age, and
teaching allows me to combine the love of the animal with the rewards of working with
people. It is delightfull to see a student blossom into a confident, yet aware rider. I
especially take great pride in my beginner kids. These children who have never
seriously worked with horses before are--over the course of a few months--able to bravely
handle animals twice their size! But perhaps the most obvious reason why I enjoy
teaching and why students love being taught is because the sport of horse back riding is
terrific fun. Where else can one combine a love of animals with a great physical workout
and a respect for the awe inspiring power, yet surprising gentleness of these amazing
creatures. I hope to assist anyone who is interested in building a relationship
which encompases all of these ideals. I'll see you at the ranch! |
